The Rangers picked up Mark Messier and Adam Graves from the Oilers. In the 1993-94 season, the Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 54 years defeating the Vancouver Canucks. The Islanders earned 118 points that season. They defeated the Vancouver Canucke in a four game series to lift the Stanley Cup once again. Bossy made the Cup winning goal and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy.

The 1982-83 season saw competition between the Edmonton Oilers and the Islanders as the best team of NHL. The Islanders defeated the Oilers to win their fourth cup. Billy Smith was voted the MVP and Bossy made the cup winning goal again. The Islanders fan following was increasing owing to their popularity and wins. Devils Stephane Richer scored the winning goal in the second overtime, giving them to a 3-2 lead in game 6. However, the Devils lost to the Rangers in that game. Devils Vlaeri Zelepukin tied the final game with only 7.7 seconds remaining. They were defeated in a double overtime goal by Stephane Matteau.
